Frequently asked questions

Is the comparison tool really free?
Yes. The web tool is free and runs entirely on your device — no account, and your workbook is never uploaded. You only pay when you want a team to share reviews, version history, and an audit trail on the hosted platform.
Do my files get uploaded?
No. The web tool compares both workbooks locally in your browser using WebAssembly — nothing is sent to a server. The desktop app is fully offline. Only the hosted platform processes files server-side, and only for files you explicitly connect.
We already have SharePoint version history. Why do we need this?
SharePoint and OneDrive version a file — they roll the whole workbook back. They don’t show which formula changed, who changed it, or which cells were affected. SheetDelta is the comparison-and-review layer on top of the versions you already keep. See Excel version history vs SheetDelta.
What file formats are supported?
The free tool handles .xlsx and .xlsm. The desktop app and platform add .xlsb, .xls, and template formats, plus deeper formula, VBA, chart, and pivot analysis. See supported formats.
Can AI agents use SheetDelta?
That’s what the MCP server and CLI are for — so AI assistants like Claude and Cursor, and your own agents and CI, can compare and read Excel workbooks directly with nothing uploaded. They are built but not yet publicly released; the free browser tool works today. See SheetDelta for AI agents.
Does SheetDelta merge workbooks or resolve conflicts?
No — and we’re deliberate about that. SheetDelta shows you exactly what changed and lets your team review and approve it. It does not auto-merge two workbooks, because silent merges are how spreadsheets break.
